2013 in review

Happy New Year’s Eve! It’s been a wonderful year! Special thanks to everyone who reads/follows my blog! It so enjoyable to share ideas about the beautiful world of music and I look forward to the new discoveries we’ll make in 2014! Cheers!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 12,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Pierre Boulez

Pierre Boulez is a very important composer of our time. He sought to bring together the constructivism from the Viennese School and the freedom of Debussy and Messian. The world events of the 20th century demanded a new musical language and Boulez was one of the key innovators who wrote music with sincerity and as he says, “a conquest for freedom”. He is a very fascinating composer for those who are interested in learning about music from our time and for those who want to want to express themselves in a musical language relevant to one’s time and culture.

Here is an example of one of his pieces, Dérive 2 composed in 1988/2006/2009.  It is written for 11 instruments. The skill required of these musicians is absolutely amazing! It is completely planned out and sounds very spontaneous. It is also fascinating to think of how in many cases music from the 20th and 21st centuries corresponds to the visual arts.

New Christmas Arrangement: “Angels We Have Heard On High”

Merry Christmas! Here’s a new arrangement for this year’s Christmas season! It’s designed so that you can use it if you have anywhere between one to three violins and a viola! Violin one plays the melody throughout and each part enters in layers until you have the full texture, so it can be played as a solo, duo, trio, or quartet. Enjoy!!

Raga Malkauns/Hindolam by SANGAM-Indian Classical Music

Listening to this music takes you up into joy. This is a video of traditional Indian music. It is amazing to notice how we can listen to music that may be from another culture and we can still take part in the communication. Music is a communication of the spirit. It expresses deep things we experience in our lives and connects the universal longing we have for beauty. And these musicians are top notch, outstanding!
